Our Story

Longbush Wines began with the vision and passion of John Thorpe. His journey into winemaking was driven by a deep love for the land and a desire to create wines that celebrated the unique character of Gisborne’s terroir.
John’s entrepreneurial spirit extended beyond winemaking, particularly in hospitality and heritage preservation. He started by restoring Shed 1 of the historic Gisborne freezing works, successfully petitioning to prevent its demolition. This effort led to the preservation of the iconic building, which today houses The Wharf and Lonestar. Over time, these restorations contributed to the revitalization of the waterfront area. John also played a significant role in developing other local venues, including Landfall, helping to shape Gisborne’s vibrant dining scene. The historic freezing works area, where The Works restaurant now stands, remains a testament to his dedication to preserving the region's heritage while fostering growth and innovation.
In the early days, John worked actively to build the foundation of Longbush Wines, sourcing the finest grapes and experimenting with winemaking techniques. Along the way, he was joined by his family, who shared his commitment to sustainability, craftsmanship, and excellence.
With the guidance of his son Ash Thorpe, who joined the business in 2013, and the expertise of winemaker Claudia Hintz, John continues to steer the winery toward even greater success. Together, they uphold the values that have made Longbush Wines a beloved brand in the industry—quality, sustainability, and a deep respect for the land.
From humble beginnings to now a established winery with over 35 years of wine making experience, Longbush Wines remains a family-owned business, proud to share its story and wines with the world.
